Why delegating code to MySQL Stored Routines is poor engineering practice | code.openark.org

“I happen to use stored routines with MySQL. In fact, my open source project common_schema heavily utilizes them. DBA-wise, I think they provide with a lot of power (alas, the ANSI:SQL 2003 syntax feels more like COBOL than a sane programming language, which is why I use QueryScript instead).

However I wish to discuss the use of stored routines as integral part of your application code, which I discourage.” / Shlomi Noach.

Moodle Plugins Directory: Ranking block

This block improves gamification into the moodle platform.

The ranking block works together with the moodle course completion. In the moodle course you configure the criterias to the end of the course. The ranking block monitors these activities and add points to the students based on accomplishing the activities.

The Architecture of Open Source Applications Volume 2: Moodle

Moodle is a web application used in educational settings. While this chapter will try to give an overview of all aspects of how Moodle works, it focuses on those areas where Moodle’s design is particularly interesting:The way the application is divided into plugins; The permission system, which controls which users can perform which actions in different parts of the system; The way output is generated, so that different themes skins can be used to give different appearances, and so that the interface can be localised. The database abstraction layer.

GPS Course Format for Moodle: Conditional display based on geolocation | Moodle News

The new GPS Course Format from Ka:Media allows course creators to append geolocation information to their course resources and activities to restrict access based on the student’s location. Imagine the ability to hide materials until a student was in proximity to a specific place! Scavenger hunts, virtual tours of cities, geocaching challenges…I can think of a couple of cool ways to use this GPS format. With a responsive or Mobile theme this could be a really awesome and amazing way to bring interactivity to your blended classroom.
